Ortona: An overlooked gem on the Adriatic

Ortona is one of the Adriatic's best-kept secrets. Perched on a high coastal promontory in the Abruzzo region, it's a town where dramatic history meets the laid-back charm of the Italian coast.

A deep sense of history

Ortona has a "warrior" soul. Originally an ancient Frentani port, it later became a strategic Roman town. However, it is most famous - and grimly remembered - for the Battle of Ortona in December 1943. The town, known as "Little Stalingrad", was almost completely destroyed during intense street fighting between Canadian and German forces.

Today, the town has been beautifully rebuilt and has received the Gold Medal for Civilian Courage. You can still feel this history at the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery and the local war museum (MUBA).

Your Adriatic getaway

Imagine waking up in one of the many seaside villas tucked away in the Mediterranean scrub, where the scent of salt air mingles with blooming rosemary. Ortona offers the perfect holiday balance: the upper town is full of narrow cobblestone streets and piazzas, while the lower coast offers the beaches of Lido Riccio and Lido Saraceni.

Whether you're looking for a luxurious holiday home with panoramic views of the Castello Aragonese or a cozy holiday apartment near the harbor, the atmosphere here is authentic and relaxed. Sunset walks along the "Orientale" promenade offer some of the most stunning views of the coastline you'll find in Italy.

Flavours from sea and land

Abruzzo cuisine is bold and honest. In Ortona, the menu is dominated by "Brodetto".

Brodetto alla Vastese/Ortonese: A rich, tomato-based fish stew served with toasted bread.

Pallotte Cacio e Ova: Savory balls made of cheese, breadcrumbs and eggs, simmered in tomato sauce.

Nevole: Unique to Ortona, these thin, crispy waffle-like sweets are flavoured with mosto cotto (cooked grape must) and anise.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: You're in the heart of wine country; the local red wines are world-class.

Activities and nature

Nature lovers will find themselves at the gateway to the Costa dei Trabocchi.

Trabocchi Coast: Visit the famous Trabocchi - ancient wooden fishing platforms resembling giant spiders that reach out into the sea. Many are now unique restaurants.

Via Verde dei Trabocchi: A stunning 42km cycling and hiking trail built on a former railway line that stretches along the turquoise coastline.

Punta Aderci Reserve: Just a short drive away, this nature reserve offers rugged cliffs and crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkelling.

Festivals and Traditions

Perdono di San Tommaso (first weekend in May): This is the biggest event of the year. Ortona houses the relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle. The festival involves a massive historical parade, traditional costumes and spectacular fireworks over the sea.

Summer Sagra: During July and August, nearby villages host "Sagre" (food festivals) celebrating everything from local wine to grilled lamb skewers (arrosticini).
